NieA_7: Episode 13
Home/Change Series
Ep. 13 (Time Flows By in Enohana Bath), cut 135. The last episode seems to bring the quiet, mostly understated story to a gentle close. With NieA safely returned and the hole in the roof of Mayuko’s room finally repaired, the hard-working student settles in to work toward her examinations. A visit by her friend Chiaki gives her a chance to reflect over the significance of her last months. But a final catastrophe brings the series to a dramatic end.
Episode 13 was directed by Yasuhiro Geshi, who also handled episodes 2 and 7. He also worked as episode director on the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (seasons one and two) as well as Akazukin Cha-Cha and the 2014-15 Mushishi: The Next Chapter (odd numbered episodes).
The senior animation director of this episode was Masahiro Sekiguchi, a veteran of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the yoshitoshi ABe series Serial Experiments Lain; he later worked on many series including Puella Magi Madoka Magica (episode animation director). He has recently served as chief animation director for Rainbow Days (2016) and In Another World With My Smartphone (2017). I believe that the occasional sheets of light-turquoise paper with small sketches and lots of comments are Sekiguchi’s communications with his three episode animation directors.
These were Yuichi Tanaka (Animation director, Ep. 1), Mitsuhiro Yoneda (also AD, Eps. 11-12, episode editor, Ep. 11) and Yoshitaka Yasuda (also AD, Eps. 2 and 7). Now that sketches have come to hand from episodes supervised solo by all these artists, I've attempted to sort out which cuts each artist did.
