Genshiken
Home/Change Series
This well-respected CGI series is an adaptation of a manga by Shimoku Kio. The title is an abbreviation for the name of a college club devoted to the appreciation of anime/manga, called Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyūkai [The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture] or ?Genshiken? for short. A light-hearted, realistic story, it focuses on a shy college freshman, Kanji Sasahara, who joins Genshiken and gradually develops into a confident adult with the help of the friendships he makes. We also get to know a number of the other otaku, and the show realistically portrays how young people use their discussion of fantasy plots to get a handle on real-life psychological issues.
So far, all the art in this gallery comes from the first TV series (2004), produced by Palm Studio. The series director, Takashi Ikehata, is an emerging figure in animation that got his start working as part of a team of talented animators working on the Studio Pierrot 1998 series Fancy Lala. Ikehata used what he learned to good effect in Inuyasha and Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, the series he directed immediately prior to Genshiken. Compared to other series I collect, the character design is more realistic, with nearly normal-sized eyes and naturalistic body proportions, which makes the occasional departures (particularly with the main character Sasahara) all the more telling.
