Episode: 67 (Sakura, Syaoran, and the Tsukimine Shrine). When Sakura meets Yukito at the festival, she grabs his hand and happily says, “Let’s go!” Here he’s smiling down at her as she practically drags him past the food booths. Sequence number: A4, original production background.

I’ve lined this cel up according to the indications on the background, but in fact the final version of the cut begins with Yukito a step to the right. Why?

Here's one idea: click the thumbnail and see what an odd shape the background now has. Not one of the sides is parallel to the other. From screening the scene, I can see that this must have been part of a much longer background that showed this booth (the sign reads “TAKOYAKI” or “Fried Octopus” as you might expect) and the next one to the right. It’s been cleanly separated on the right from the part showing the next booth, but on the left someone has laid a straight edge on top of it and physically ripped part of the painting off! See the spiderweb of cracks this caused.

Maybe this damage occurred before or during the filming process, and this explains why the cut begins a step farther to the right than indicated on the bg (i.e., so the damage wouldn’t show in the final cut).

It's always interesting to speculate on what these artifacts have had to go through on the way to our collections.
