Episode 57 (Sakura, Syaoran, and the Elevator): Eriol’s evil magic makes the elevator the two are riding in stick mysteriously between dimensions, and then one of the sides of the car drops out. Sakura seemingly falls into a bottomless abyss as Syaoran helplessly watches in horror. Sequence number: A19.

This entire scene, animated in slow motion and showing the elevator car seemingly disintegrating through creepy Eriol's magic, is memorably well done. This was the first episode with animation supervision by Kunihiko Hamada [濱田 邦彦], who later did the equally memorable Episode 68 with the "four seasons" meeting with Clow Reed. Hamada had begun doing inbetweening for series such as Zetsuai (1992) and Tokyo Babylon (1992-94). He moved up to key animation and assistant animation director (for the X movie, 1996) and then served as a key animator for eight CCS episodes.
This crucial episode was his first stint as episode animation director, and it was an auspicious one. He was one of the animation directors for the CCS Sealed Card movie, then contributed animation direction to Galaxy Angel, the X TV series, and the Yoshitoshi Abe series Texhnolyze.. In 2006 he became chief animation director/character designer for the successful Nana series, then served in the same capacities for Chihayafuru. In 2017 he returned to where he'd begun, becoming character designer for Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Saga.
