If good cels of The Light are scarce, centered, full-frame, open-eyes cels of The Dark are almost non-existent. The Dark takes center screen in just this brief shot. As this has been one of my most heavily visited items, therefore, I've left this solo scan up, even though you can see her in the previous item, reunited (after many years of separation) with her twin sister.
SENSEI CHECK EXTRA!
it's easy to mistake cels of “Black Light” with genuine cels of The Dark. "Black Light" (as I call her) refers to partially negative images of The Light that have shown up on the market. You can see one of these “Black Light” cels in Rallihir’s Cel Gallery.
These images, I suspect, were originally intended to alternate rapidly with normal-color cels to produce a "flicker" effect to dramatize the Card powering up. But after the "Pokemon Shock" of December 1997, when hundreds of children became ill after watching a similar effect in that series, studios were ordered to modify or avoid the effect. My guess is that Madhouse tried out such a technique, then rejected the footage as risky and reshot the sequence with natural color cels only.
In any case, this one’s the real McKuroi, and here’s a quick guide to telling them apart:
Crown and collar: Dark – both white; Black Light – both black.
Color of robe: Dark – white symbols on black; Black Light – black symbols on gray.
Hair : Dark – straight black; Black Light – curly/wavy blue.
Shape of crown: Dark – gap in the middle, two horns on either side curving in and out like a lyre; Black Light – biggest horn in the middle, two horns on either side pointing sharply away.
Behavior: Dark – Sucks you into her world and turns out all the lights; Black Light – comes on to you while holding your hand over her power switch.
Oops … sorry … that last refers to Black Chii.
