The featured sketch on magenta paper seems to be the turning point in the animation process. Here Michiko’s head seems more realistically mannish, with the eyes in correct orientation. The B1 genga (first thumb) is identical, showing that the magenta-paper sketch was a pre-genga response to the rough seen in the previous set. That seems likely the work of senior animation director Shigeo Akahori, putting the art in this cut more firmly in line with the series character development.

The set also included another sketch on yellow paper, labeled B1 shuusei (second thumb). That is a partial, subtly different from the genga but identical to the B1 douga. That is likely to be junior director Ishikawa’s very precise final thoughts on this profile. You can compare the sketchwork in these yellow-paper shuusei drawings with similar shuusei sketches by Ishikawa in my Rozen Maiden Zuruckspulen gallery, for which he supervised Eps. 2, 6, and 10. For the finished douga frame, move on to the reanimation later in this gallery.
