Ep. 11: "Destiny Transformation." During this adventure, Mone disappears mysteriously. After a desperate search, the adventurers find themselves in a fierce battle with their dreamworld enemies. Suddenly a new, more powerful fighter appears and dissolves their most dangerous opponents, drawing their atomized substance to herself. It’s Mone, wearing an elaborate ceremonial robe. She is “The Priestess of Sleep,” they learn, who properly should exist only in the dream world and have no physical form in the other warriors’ waking existence.

This series, extracted from the middle of a more elaborate cut appears at about 16:30 in the episode. The cut begins with a long pan-up move showing Mone and her robe; then, when Tomokazu calls her name, she averts her head, a bit shyly, then flies off quickly to the left.

This scant set of sketches preserves the A2 genga, the rough on which this was based, a partial shuusei, and three dougas, A3-A5 (the last being a clean-up of the A2 genga). I suspect that this set of sketches, being normal sized, were bookended by larger pan sketches, the first being vertical and the secon, showing her horizontal body in flight. The thumbs include the rough and shuusei by animation director Kannan.

SENSEI CHECK!

The animation director for this episode was Masaaki Kannan [河南 正昭], who also handled Eps. 3 and 7. Kannan was a wide-ranging animator who began in 1980 doing inbetweeners for Ashita no Joe and Doraemon. He began doing key animation for Urusei Yatsura, eventually working up to episode animation direction for the same long-running series (ten episodes); then he was a prolific animation director for Maison Ikkoku (25 episodes) and for Oshinbo (39 episodes). He later contributed in this way to a wide range of series, including Hunter X Hunter (eight episodes), Full Moon o Sagashite(12 episodes), and Matantei Loki Ragnarok (four episodes). His credits as character designer/chief animation director include The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Ginga Densetsu Weed, and the various Hetalia series.
