After several more complications, Hans and the Princess manage to awaken the Golden Horse, and a final battle ensues between these two and the Witch’s evil minions. Here Hans prepares to take on the three bats that are the his most determined enemies. Sequence number: B2. This image appears around 44:29 of the YouTube version.
This image is from one of the film’s most dramatic and often “quoted” moments in publicity material for the film. A very close sequence-mate was actually reproduced in the booklet sold at the theatrical showings, just underneath the film’s title (see thumbnail). From screening the cut, it seems that this image alternated with the B1 cel for some time as Hans prepares to deliver the decisive blow.
I’d had the B5 from this scene for some time, but when this one came up later for auction, I could not resist adding it to my little collection. This cel layer is, unfortunately, separated from its A level (with the Princess) and tightly stuck to its douga: I could not risk trying to separate the two because of the delicate airbrushing on the back of the sheet. However, the douga has served the purpose of protecting this airbrushing, so the cel, at least, is in prime condition.
