While her behavior is similar to the benign Azuki-arai, Azuki-Babā (.小豆婆), or “Bean Hag,” is more frightening. Appearing only in Miyaki Prefecture, and only at twilight evenings of misty or rainy autumn days, she likewise shakes beans in a drainer while singing the sinister “shall I wash beans or eat a human” song. Except that, according to this local tradition, she’s not kidding: if you stand listening, or attempt to catch a glimpse of this yōkai, you will never be seen or heard from again. Your only recourse is to run. (Watch out for that slippery rock!)
