Episode 9, cut 46. Walking down the street to the place where she will meet up with Syaoran, Sakura stops for a moment to appreciate what an absolutely beautiful day it is.
This pan background was generously oversized (20.5” x 10.5”) to allow Sakura to move to the right during this cut. It came with a number of sketches, mostly photocopies (but see next item) that were used by the background atelier for reference. In the thumbs, I’ve added a pretty A1 genga of Sakura shading her eyes against the bright sun (entirely photocopy) along with a book layer that was prepared for this cut; it shows a tree that moves behind her at a different rate from the background.
It is interesting that many of the CCS/CC backgrounds were done in brighter, more primary colors than those used in the earlier cel-based series. Notice how bold the shadows are at the bottom of the wall. Also note in the screen cap that the back background has been slightly blurred to emphasize that Sakura is much closer to the viewer than to the wall.
