As she continues her ploy, Rei looks upward with an “exalted” look on her face as she discusses the joys of having a secret significant other.
Again I’ve featured the genga (with another example of Itō’s characteristic circled numeral one) and added the rough and shuusei as thumbnails.
Amusingly, as the cut continues, Rei swivels her pupil to look over and down at Chibiusa, expecting the youngster to give some reaction that would signal, “Yes, I’m feeling the same way about Someone Special too!” This part of the cut was worked out in partial roughs, in which Itō worked out this significant eye swivel (A3) with special care.
Finally, Rei lowers her eyebrow in a knowing expression, a blush now showing under her right eye (A4).
The two are verifiably onto something important, as viewers who have followed this season’s adventures know, but on another level they are totally off course. Accepting the help of a shapeshifting high priest in one’s dreams and magical battles is not at all the same as idolizing an older male in one’s public school. Right? Or …
