Ep. 12, cut 269. After NieA’s return to the bath-house, the two resume their regular squabbling, until Mayuko realizes that a typhoon is developed outside. Concerned that the torrential rain will flood her room through the hole left by Niea’s UFO, she gets her companion to go up on the roof to help hold a tarp over the damage. The squabbling continues, until suddenly Mayuko sees that Niea has let go of her side of the tarp and is standing in the opposite direction, staring into the distance. At first, she thinks the alien is sabotaging her work, then she gets a glimpse of Niea’s unusually rapt expression and realizes that something more serious is going on.

Featured above is a dramatic rough, done on white paper. Notice the bold “shuusei” [修正] written in the bottom right corner. There evidently was some reconsideration of the original keyframes, and both the B1 and B2 images were redone. There was also a shuffling of these frames, with the image originally numbered B2 now becoming the opening frame of the sequence. The genga is added in the thumbnail

Episode 12 was directed by Tomokazu Tokoro [ところ ともかず], who had done key animation for Serial Experiments Lain > and subsequently directed Ep. 1 of Haibane Renmei.. He subsequently served as director of Eps. 1-4 of the Hellsing Ultimate OVA. The senior animation director was Masahiro Sekiguchi [関口 雅浩 ] another veteran of Lain who later worked on many series including Puella Magi Madoka Magica (episode animation director).
