Ep. 13, cut 13. Mayuko and NieA are having one of their regular squabbles over breakfast, which consists of some kind of instant miso soup this morning, along with pictures of gourmet meals cut from a magazine. Niea demands rice with her soup, and Mayuko, who’s having none of her attitude, snaps back, “If I had rice, I wouldn’t need to use my imagination.” Then she glugs down her soup in a single move.
Mayuko is showing a slightly scary attitude of her own, and it took the animators several attempts to capture it realistically without making it too over-the-top. The featured image is the second layout, and a copy of the first one is in the thumb. They are worth comparing, as the first draft makes her look openly super-deformed, while the image above tones this down, to the point that Mayuko looks more politely disgruntled than outraged. As the screen cap (and the next item) shows, the team settled on something in between, not quite SD, but clearly a titanic rage.
