Cut 270. During the episode, NieA also has a vision of her “home” UFO that leaves her disoriented and feeling a little guilty. So on her way home she gets what she thinks is a gourmet dinner for her roommate Mayuko, who’s pleasantly surprised. The first section of this animation (cut 270) is not very interesting: NieA stretches her weary muscles and comments on how hard she’d worked. (For once, this is no tall tale as we’ve seen.) At the end, however, she sees that Mayuko has made herself two croquettes for her dinner, which (NieA assumes) she’s no longer going to be eating.

This long and complicated cut came with a full complement of sketches, including the roughs by episode animation director Hideo Shimosaka [下坂 英男] and a set of shuusei roughs. It’s not clear who supervised Shimosaka’s work, and no one (evidently) was credited as the overall animation director for this series. But as Akira Takada [高田晃] is also listed as animation director for this episode, and as the shuuseis resemble the roughs that I’ve gotten for Ep. 4 (which this artist did solo), I think it’s likely that they are her work. Takada was the more experienced animator and, as noted before, was soon to emerge as character designer and senior animation director of Haibane Renmei.
I’ve featured the gengas for this set, as they are lively and worthy renditions of the images generated by Shimosaka and Takada. The thumbnails give the spare but action-filled first versions by the junior animator, along with the much more detailed revisions by his supervisor.
