Episode 37, cut 158. Hikaru, pressed hard by her enemy Nova, seems to be on the verge of final defeat, but in the middle of her despair, a vision of Presea appears to her. “Remember your wish,” the armorer says to her, “that you would revive your sword at the risk of your life.”
“Remember what you are fighting for,” Presea adds, ribbons floating magically behind her.

This slim sketch set included a holograph layout, a rough sketch on yellow paper, and a shuusei on turquoise paper. I’ve featured the last of these, which I believe is a reaction to the layout (first thumb) where Presea’s eyes are too low on her face, making her look a bit like an alien creature. It uses the “box eyes” style that is characteristic of the series’ senior animation director Atsuko Ishida. (Compare the similar “box eyes” in several of the layouts from Ep. 45, for which Ishida was credited as animation director).
It gets the placing of the eyes correct, and, more importantly, it vividly shifts the emotion on Presea’s face from sullen anger (as in the layout) to something mixed with sadness and concern for Hikaru, now battling both her enemy Nova and her inner doubts in herself. Interestingly, this is the direction in which Madoka Hirayama (平山円), animation director for this episode took the image. His version (second thumb) is even sadder than the shuusei, and comparison with the screencap shows that this sketch (though less vivid than the shuusei) became the basis for the final image.
