Ep. 1 (Sakura and the Clear Cards), cut 192. The morning after her Cards go blank, Sakura and Kero-chan stop by Yukito’s house. He invites her into the house, and she slides his door shut and turns to see him already midway into his magical transformation into his Yue form.
The background came with a pack of photocopy sketches, the most impressive being the featured image, a complete layout showing both the startled Sakura and Yue’s unfolding wings. Some additional sketches showed the development of this “unfold,” I’d guess to allow the artists to gauge how much of the door needed to be made visible. (As the wings spread out, gaps appear between the feathers, needing the door to be completely realized.) The C1 of this series is added in the first thumb, and in the second thumb I add an interesting photocopy, evidently of a rough on tinted paper showing Sakura’s (unmoving) pose. The original of this copy may be the work of Kunihiko Hamada, the episode animation director of this show and character designer/ senior animation director of the series.
