Ep. 3, cuts 58, 60. Getting ready to do her flower observation, Sakura thumbs through her book to find the page describing the parts of a blossom.
This set of cuts is made more memorable in the episode, because Sakura finds in the page corner a little cartoon sketch of herself, titled “Sakura-chan.” She shows it to Tomoyo, commenting that Naoko must have done it when she borrowed her textbook. Then she finds another, this one of her with her beau Syaoran, which makes her burst out in one of her memorable “HooEEEE!” shouts.
The background, however, is not very interesting, as the book with its funny cartoons was generated on CGI animation. So all the atelier needed to produce was a plain grayscale spectrum. It was unusually long, however, fully 18 inches in length, presumably because the two cuts needed slightly different grayscale intensities. A cropped scan of this long background is added in the first thumb. The second thumb adds a copy sketch, evidently a layout shuusei, shows an artist’s effort to make the pose of Sakura’s right hand more natural.
