Episode 1, Cut 55. The “rewind” version begins with a condensed recap of the beginning of the earlier version, including the moment when Younger Jun (the one who chose “Will Wind”) awakens Shinku. In that version, the doll gets on her feet through her own strength, walks up to Jun, then opens her eyes. In this version she comes to life in a more flamboyant way, levitating in the room, then swooping down in front of Jun, her contemptuous eyes open all the time.
I’ve featured the A2 genga above, an especially effective image in Shinku’s swoop down. The A1 genga, showing the start of the cut, is in the first thumb. This sketch set included shuuseis on both yellow and green paper. The yellow corrections (not imaged) are, I believe, by one of the episode’s animation directors, and the green ones by the series supervising animation director (and character designer), Kyuta Sakai. Sakai’s A2 shuusei was more complete than most, so I’ve added that as the second thumb.
