The final image in this cut needed to be an intimidating one, and so the animators worked hard on it, beginning with this impressively oversized A4 END layout, which was the basis for the scene’s conclusion.

Notice the note in the upper right. To make the downward motion look smooth, the studio incorporated a gentle but steady pan down and to the left. In a remarkable bit of largesse (as you’ll see later if you’re a details person like Sensei) this was planned to take place a teeeeeeny bit at a time at a 24-to-a-second pace, while Shinku’s motion was taking place at a slower animation pace. So the note calls for sixty-one little bitty gradations of the pan down to the left. The exact placing of each frame in these sixty-one mini-pans is carefully noted on the gengas and on the back of each douga.
The thumbs add the A3 genga and the A4 genga, which had a thin strip added to the right edge to accommodate the pan. (Unfortunately with that high-acid celotape used by too many studios.)
