Ep. 19. After the opening scene, Zagato summons Emeraude from the place where he’s imprisoned her. Their confrontation at first goes as expected, with the princess begging him to stop resisting the Knights and her captor refusing, promising the finish them all. Then suddenly Emeraude gasps. “Zagato! You’re wounded!” (He’s just come from a clash with Hikaru supported by her mashin Rayearth, where he came off badly.)
This is an intriguing moment in the anime plot, one of many narrative details not included in the manga but scripted for this episode by CLAMP’s Nanese Ohkawa. Up to this point, we’ve been given to assume that Zagato is the stereotypical “bad boss” and Emeraude is the hapless female needing to be rescued. But their conversation turns more familiar at this point, while the solicitous Emeraude magically heals Zagato’s injury, and they reminisce about their former relationship as princess and loyal, devoted subject. As the clever Alcyone has already suspected, the two of them are more, much more than captor and victim.
Which is crucial for the tragic turn the plot takes with Zagato’s inevitable fall and Emeraude’s reaction to his death.
