Befriended by the sick little girl Chico, Unico finds that he can transform himself into his more powerful alicorn identity, with full size and wings. Knowing that the pollution given off by a local factory has caused her illness, he takes the girl on a flight above the dark clouds, where she can experience fresh air and sunlight. But Unico soon realizes that this is only a short-term solution, for he has to return Chico home through the dark curtain of noxious fumes.

This setup was artificially created by Sanrio to frame Unico and Chico with an overlay of dark clouds. You can see from the screencap that the scene was actually realized in a quite different way, with the smokestacks of the factory visible behind the two. The bottom layer of this combination has been severely trimmed to fit inside the frame and has lost its sequence numbers. The other layers do retain their cut number (102B) and sequence numbers (Unico/Chico: B34, black clouds: D2). The top layer was not stuck to the others, but Unico is unfortunately stuck tight to the lower cloud layer, which in turn is plastered to the back of the “frame.”

In the first thumbnail I’ve given a somewhat closer view of the Chico/Unico image without the rather dusty cloud layer that was placed on top. The second thumbnail shows how the setup was sold inside one of Sanrio’s promotional frames.
