Cut B511, according to a note on the top of the cel. The tryst ends in calamity, as the lovers’ flight is detected and both furious parents soon arrive on the scene. Here Syrius’ father, the Sea King Glaucus, demands to know exactly what his son thought he was doing, then imperiously orders him back to the palace. Sequence number: A22
The glowing effect in Glaucus’ eyes must have been added in a post-production stage. Still, this is a fine, intimidating image of this character, painted nearly corner-to-corner on this movie-sized cel.
While not showing any bulging or giving off a chemical smell, however, it does show some signs of sloppy storage. (Like at least one other Syrius cel, it arrived wrapped in a dry-cleaner’s bag.) One corner turns up, and the left edge shows some “washboard” warping. While it otherwise seems in OK condition, this one is going to get some close attention, as I’m aware that cels from this anime film are prone to vinegar syndrome.
