Cut 106. Kotomi bugs Shōko to get out onto the playground and play with her fellows, which finally irritates the woman-grown-child to the point that she jumps up and yells, “I said I was fine, didn’t I?” Then realizing that she wasn’t being a very convincing little girl, she apologizes and dashes off, leaving her companion puzzled and musing, “That wasn’t a very social thing to say!”

This short sketch set did not preserve the rough (pre-genga) stage, except for a layout that seems to have stood in for the A1 genga of Kotomi. However, it was interesting enough to share in some detail The main action involves Shōko’s energetic dash away from the all-too-importunate Kotomi. The sequence was made simpler to animate by keeping Shōko’s perspective the same, so her running motion could be designed as a repeating bank. Meanwhile a track-back move on Kotomi and the background makes her look smaller as Shōko appears to be getting farther and farther away.

Featured above is the C1 genga, one of just two keyframes for Shōko’s action. The thumbnail adds senior animation director Itō’s shuusei, which opens both eyes just a twitch and adjusts the pose and shadows of her pumping arms.
