Cut 187. As the duel moves into its next phase, Sesshōmaru (along with the distant observers) sees that Inuyasha has transformed into his red-eyed yōkai form. His opponent first assumes that this change reveals the half-blood’s desperation, but then he feels his own weapon resonate with the Tessaiga in a new way. But before he can figure out how this changes the odds, Inuyasha leaps off his planet sliver to clash blades. (This cut occurs at 9:35 of the episode version.)

This lightning-quick cut reveals a lot about the quality of animation that went into this OVA, so I’ve shared all of the gengas, scanned at about actual size. Although the images of Inuyasha during this move are smallish, they were designed with extreme care, in much more detail than could possibly be seen on a TV screen or tablet. (This, and the letterbox formatting of the sketches, reminds us that they were created for theatrical viewing and so needed to be more carefully done as such details could be seen, however fleetingly, on a movie’s projection screen.)

The A1 genga, showing Inuyasha at the start of the move, is featured above. That was nearly good enough to go, but animation director Nakajima’s partial shuusei is added in the first thumbnail. The second adds the A2 genga, showing the dog-demon “winding up” for his big jump.

That too was nearly good enough, as Nakajima’s shuusei (not imaged) was also a partial. But move ahead, for the animation director took a much bigger role in finishing the action images that follow.
