And here is the image that starts the cut as finally used, with Kino seen from a level perspective, looking back at his host as he prepares to leave.

This broken set lacked its gengas and dougas, but no matter as it did preserve this very fine rough sketch by episode animation director Takuya Matsumoto [松本 卓也]. This artist, who also oversaw the animation of Ep. 2, worked as key animator on a very wide range of projects, ranging from the classic cel-based Slayers Next and Slayers Try to edgy, new-wave series such as Gankutsuou and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. His most visible credits other than Kino have been for the Pokemon movies, for which he often served as an animation director.

The thumb adds one of the other remaining bits of this broken sketch set, a copy art board, which dramatically calls attention to the places where streams of sunshine are supposed to fall through the otherwise dark woods. (But visit the thumb in the next item...)

Update: The gengas did show up on the market a little later, and you can view these now as the second item ahead in this gallery.
