Then, abruptly, Kino looks up at the archway over the host’s door. Previously he’d seen that there was no crest over the arch leading to the world he’d just visited -- appropriately, as it had no permanent identity. But this arch does retain an aristocratic coat of arms. The host nods: yes, he is the ancestor of the exiled king, against whom the townspeople had rebelled. (And so he alone preserves the history of that country’s past.)

This too is a rough, the work of animation director Matsumoto, though (as usual) slightly simpler than the A1 keyframe. The thumb adds a copy layout that survived in this set, which shows that this pose was originally numbered “3” (with the face-forward pose in the rejected layout being “1”). When the start key was eliminated, this frame was renumbered, as you can see, as “2.”

Note that the streams of light piercing through the forest canopy come down at a different angle from the copy art board in the previous item. This little undramatic cut thus gave the animation team more trouble than you’d expect.
