Then the “mage,” sensing the children’s unwanted presence, looks sharply in Nimya’s direction. She panics and, along with her playmates, runs off into the woods.

The rough sketch above, by the episode animation director, Naomi Miyata, was my favorite of this set. See how the character emerges from a preliminary set of scribbles in yellow pencil, and while it is rough, it already gives a sharp, three-dimensional image of this character.

It reminds me of some of the “really rough” sketches that I’ve obtained from the classic Slayers episodes that work up dramatic moments in an extravagant flurry of graphite strokes. Those probably aren’t drawn by Miyata, but they vividly show the artistic approach of animation director Miyata: get the action clear first, and the detail of the character can be cleaned up later.

The thumbs again add the resulting genga and the mysterious post-genga shuusei that works on those important eyes.
