Episode 27 (The Secret of the Pillar of Cephiro), cut 101. After a serious earthquake, the Knights rush to Guru Clef’s throne room, where he solemnly tells them that Cephiro is doomed to perish if these events continue. “We don’t have much time,” Umi comments, and Fuu silently agrees.

The featured shuusei genga, showing the A1 key, is likely the work of Madoka Hirayama, the episode’s animation director. During this short cut, Fuu turns slightly to her right, looking at Hikaru. This broken sketch set also preserved the A2 (end) genga (first thumb) as well as a shuusei genga of this keyframe (second thumb), also likely by Hirayama.

Madoka Hirayama [平山円] was a wide-ranging gengaman (CCS, Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Princess Miyu) eventually rising to episode animation direction (The Big O, Saint Tail) and then to character designer/chief animation director (ToHeart - Remember my Memories, Zone of the Enders). Recently he was chief animation director for the successful 2016-17 series Love Live! Sunshine!!.

Hirayama had contributed key animation for MKR’s first season, plus supervising the animation of two episodes. In the second season, he took a larger role, serving as animation director for seven episodes, more than any other single animator.

A rough of Umi from the preceding cut, also by Hirayama, is in another gallery. This shuusei genga of Hikaru comes from the same episode and is also this artist’s work.
