This is from the cold-opening scene, in which we find the abandoned kitten by the roadside, sitting by a set of garbage cans and weakly appealing to passersby for something to eat. Two young girls stop for a while, but they have nothing to offer the famished cat, and their school won’t let them have animals.
This is part of a slow blink Chibi-Neko does when she realizes that the girls aren’t actually going to help her, but it nicely captures the way in which starvation is sapping her strength. Happily, the next one to stop by is Tokio, the film’s protagonist, and the film’s opening credits begin to roll.
