Cut 297. The doll, now helpless, hangs in midair, both arms held tight by Suigintou’s magic crow feathers.

I’ve featured the layout here, as the most complete of the images that I got in this set. But it is well worth visiting the thumbs to see the beginnings of the dramatic changes that took place in this cut during production. To emphasize the vulnerable position in which Shinku has been placed, the studio planned a slow pan to the left, making her right hand (on our left side) visible. The layout, showing the start of the cut, did not try to render the pose of this hand, but both episode animation director Tamai and senior animation director Ishii chose to finish out the image on oversized sheets of paper.

Tamai’s rather preliminary sketch simply roughs in the hand in an open pose, but works on Shinku’s expression, which just looks scared in the layout, making her properly defiant. Ishii’s “shuusei no shuusei” touches up Shinku’s anger, but dramatically reworks the arms and hand. The fingers now are realistically posed, and the arms are also held upright but in a relaxed posture. That pays off, for Suigintou is going to tug those arms in opposite directions, and that is going to have visible impact on the look of those hands and arms. (See next item.)
