Ep. 12, cut 281. As Kotomi steps onto the train, we hear Shōko say behind her, “Thank you.” The trickster, surprised, turns to see the “little girl” with this very adult serious expression. Then, to Shōko’s surprise, we see Kotomi enter the screen from the left to give her a big hug.

I’ve featured the A1 genga here, a really fine portrait of Shōko in the difficult three-quarters perspective that this series uses so often. The original layout (first thumb) makes an interesting comparison: it too is a good piece of work, but the woman-turned-girl is too unambiguously cheerful. The genga tones back the emotion, adding just a touch of sadness to the expression.

The second thumb adds the B2 genga, showing Kotomi incoming and about to give Shōko a last big hug with a little gift included. Notice that the key animator fully worked out the pose of Kotomi’s fingers, even though (as the vertical line and the shadowing indicate) these would be hidden behind Shōko’s shoulder at this point. Still, this needed to be done for the benefit of the inbetweener, who would need to show those fingers entering the frame and disappearing.
