Ep. 12, cut 286. We see the hug from two different perspectives, through one of the train windows, then closer, from the side. “Just like Dad said,” Kotomi says to no one in particular, surprising the woman-turned-girl, and then we see her board again and wave good-bye. The train pulls off, and Shōko watches her go, still puzzled by her friend’s cryptic comment.

[The A5 keyframe]

I’ve featured the A4 genga, the start key for this cut. It shows the need to make the A1 more serious, as Shōko’s expression now has shifted out of the little half-smile into something much more ambiguous. Also look at her right eye (on our left): it’s not quite in focus, seemingly tilted to the side. This sketch set did not includes pre-genga roughs, but did preserve a set of post-genga shuuseis (by Ryoichi Oki, I believe, from the way they are numbered and the use of that orange colored pencil). The A4 shuusei (first thumb) was more complete than most, and it shows the careful way in which both eyes were brought into focus with each other.

The second thumb adds the A5 END keyframe, showing Shōko watching the train pull out of the station.
