Ep. 9: Sing, Misaki! Is the Deus an Idol?! "Utae! Misaki Deusu wa aidoru!?" [歌え! みさき デウスはアイドル!?]), cut 217, according to the layout (but see notes). This episode features the main character’s first contest in the Regional Tournament that matches her with Ringo Seto, a popular singer and idol. Her angel, Ranga, has an attack that initially puts Hikaru on the defensive.

The animation of this episode has a rapidly shifting series of attack scenes, and though I screened this portion of the episode several times, I did not find this image. The cut might have been trimmed out in order to keep the action tight, or the pose might have been altered at the post-genga shuusei stage. Nevertheless, the rough sketch featured is a wonderful image of Angel Hikaru, begun as a very preliminary outline in light pink colored pencil and then refined expertly in graphite.

Notice that while the doll’s head is in full profile, her body is realistically at a three-quarters pose, as if she’s been set back by Ranga’s move but is alertly watching for an attack chance of her own. The arms spread out in both directions, fingers loose, showing superb foreshortening and making the image seem three-dimensional. Compare the much flatter, more static copy layout (first thumb) from which the artist worked. The resulting genga, also a fine piece of work, is added in the second thumb.

The animation director of this episode (and likely the artist of the featured image) was the distinguished artist Yuka Kudo [工藤 裕加], who had previously served as character designer and animation director for Full Moon o Sagashite (2002-03) and Kyo kara Maoh! (2004). This artist also served as animation director for four episodes of Ouran Highschool Host Club and has contributed to many recent series, including Darker than Black and Is This a Zombie?
