Original Unmatching Background

This small but characteristic cel shows Zucco [ズッコ], one of two characters who introduce and comment on the stories. With his female companion Chianti [キャンティ, sometimes rendered as “Candy”], he appears from time to time throughout the 52 episodes. The cel looks really sharp for its age (nearly 50 years), for the trace lines were painted by hand on the sheet in different colors, standard practice for Mushi Production.

This cel came firmly attached to an original background that was severely trimmed and shows evidence of having been used before as a backing for another cel. (A strip where a cel was taped directly onto the fuller background, then roughly removed, is still visible.) It almost certainly is not matching, but it looks stylistically right for the early 1970s and does not seem to be affecting the cel paint, so I’ve let them be.

Zucco was voiced by Yasuo Yamada [山田 康雄] (1932-95), an important seiyuu during the early years of anime. He appeared in a number of important series, including Princess Knight and the early Miyazaki/Takahata Panda Kopanda shorts. His most significant role was as Arsene Lupin III in all the early Lupin III TV series and films including Miyazaki’s 1979 Castle of Cagliostro. He also dubbed the voice of Kermit the Frog in Japanese versions of The Muppet Show.
