Cuts 101, 103. As Shōko starts to describe the quiet and picturesque old town in America where she went to college (Boston!), Karada looks over her shoulder to give her a serious, inquiring look.

I’ve featured the genga here, a fine, finished piece of work that led to the dougas (all of which were unfortunately partials). But the thumbs are well worth visiting to see the dialog between episode animation director Fujii and his mentor Ikuko Itō. The process began auspiciously with a nicely done layout:

That led to one of Fujii’s finest portraits of Karada, the vivid, colorful sketch (with the usual greeting in the lower right corner) added in the first thumb. Itō softened the lines in her shuusei, but clarified Karada’s awkward pose, shifting the shoulders and making her look more sharply to the right. That way, she is more obviously listening to someone who is sitting directly behind her.
