Cut 324. The scene returns to the Stairway to Heaven, where Silky, supine under the weight of her new wings, painfully pulls her head up. Crawling across the bridge to the row of candles that flank the steps, she mutters “I refuse ... to become an angel ... I refuse!” And ... closing credits!

This is a crucial moment in this part of the finale, which is repeated as the opening scene of Ep. 26, and I was intrigued to find that cels from this cut appear to be scarcer than other important Silky moments from this double-header. However, Vapalla’s Cels has a fine A1/B3 set-up from the part where Silky utters her line.

She calls her cel a “a masterpiece; a beautiful Silky with wings, beautifully lit.” Mine is similarly a beauty, painted across the entire breadth of the sheet and from the bottom nearly to the top, well above the registration holes and crowding the cut and sequence numbers into the corner. I’ve left the scan uncropped so you can see the largesse of cel painting, well beyond the safety in all four directions. The scene was backlit, which I’ve suggested by using a plain white backing, and the back of the cel was covered thickly with black paint to avoid pinholes when the cel was photographed.

I was happy, too, to find the wonderfully detailed douga stored separately and in fine shape, though somewhat splattered by the cel painter’s work (see the thumbnail).
