Ep. 10, Cut 185. After some additional plot twists, Shinku and the gardener doll Suiseiseki end up in an otherworldly “castle” that Kirakishou has created in the N-field. Suddenly the mystical clock that is at the heart of this crisis shows midnight and begins to strike. The two dolls turn and are shocked to see ...

Ah, well, that’s a plot spoiler. Go watch the episode. Meanwhile, notice that the rough featured above shows two distinctive traits. First, the image was generally roughed in with orange pencil, then refined with graphite, making all the lines seem to glow a little in this scan (which makes the orange pencil a little more prominent than it is to the eye). Second, it has a note beside the keyframe number (3), the second and third lines are the polite “Yoroshiku onegaishimasu” (“I hope you approve of my work’) that some artists wrote on efforts that went to be reviewed by senior animators. That identifies this artist as, most likely, Youichi Ishikawa, who worked under senior AD Akiko Matsuo on this episode. See the rough for Ep. 6, cut 179 for a very similar approach.
Added in the thumbnails are the rough for the (1) keyframe, which includes a small image of a very peevish Suigintou in the background between Shinku and Sui. She’s not happy about the increasingly minor role she’s playing in this plot, now with the tricky, resourceful Suiseiseki on the scene (and more maidens ready to drop in at a moment’s notice). The second thumb adds the layout, which gives a preliminary view of the whole scene as it was being conceived.
