Ep. 11 (Niea Under Seven Bath, Part 1), cut 201. After NieA disappears after an especially nasty spat, Mayuko is at first relieved, then increasingly concerned when she does not return quickly. After a hard day of school and work, she climbs to the roof to try to relax. Kotomi, the owner of the bath house, joins her, and they have a heart-to-heart conversation.

The douga (final state) is featured above. Notice that Mayuko’s eyes don’t seem to be in focus. This is a deliberate detail that appears in the whole sequence of cuts leading up to this one. This thin sketch set, however, shows considerable care to make this effect look natural and not just like poor @nimation. The copy layout (not imaged) and rough (first thumb) showed Mayuko hunched over farther, with her left eye (on the viewer’s right side) considerably lower than the other eye. That was reflected in one of the two A1 END dougas that I got.

But notice that the rough is canceled with a big penciled “X.” Evidently the douga simply looked anatomically unnatural, and so the animation director had another go at the pose, producing the more realistic shuusei genga given in the second thumb. That was the basis of the revised douga featured above. You can see the problem by viewing this simple “flicker” of the two dougas. Watch that left eye wobble up and down!
