This action-filled moment shows this series’ friendly yūrei protagonist coming down hard on one of his enemies. The geta, or wooden sandals, are one of his most powerful magical accessories. (They are traditionally worn by people visiting Shinto temples.) It really does look as if Kitarō has done a complicated martial arts move to execute this attack.

The cel came attached to one nearly completely painted in black, except in the places under the red “motion lines.” I’d guess that this image was backlit on the light table as it was photographed to make these motion lines seem to glow. At present this background is a little offset from the top cel, which might be deliberate (the sequence holes are in synch) or could just be the way the layers settled in during storage.

The seller did not say which of the five series this cel represents, but from its condition and the gap between Kitarō’s front teeth, I’m fairly sure this is from the fourth production made during the 1990s. A fine image regardless of the series.
