After several more complications, Hans and the Princess manage to awaken the Golden Horse, and a final battle ensues between these two and the Witch’s evil minions. Here Hans prepares to take on the three evil bats that are the his most determined enemies. Sequence number: B5 (key). This image appears around 44:29 of the YouTube version.

This image is from one of the film’s most dramatic and often “quoted” moments in publicity material for the film. A close sequence-mate was actually reproduced in the booklet sold at the theatrical showings, just underneath the film’s title (see thumbnail). It also came with an unstuck douga, unfortunately stained somewhat by close contact with the golden paint from the magical horse.

It is, unfortunately, separated from its A level (with the Princess) and stuck tight to a trimmed and unmatching background. Notice how this actually shows a set of cushions, possibly from another scene in the film, and is upside down, as the cords to the left of Hans’s head show. Still, the colors nicely compliment this astounding image, one of the most memorable in this film, and a much desired “Christmas present” to myself.
