Ep. 7, cut 220. Elder Jun has given Copy Shinku a children’s book, which (like the books in Chobits) turns out to have an eerie link to the story in which it’s placed. Afterwards, she admits to being puzzled by the purpose of printed words like these and asks her companion why books and newspapers exist. “Because if things weren’t written down,” Jun replies, “people would forget them.” This makes Shinku go into a thoughtful, existential mode, and the background too morphs from a hard-edged realistic mode into blurred focus, filled with abstract bubbles of light.

“If you and I were to suddenly disappear,” she muses, “and everyone forgot about us, we still did spend time together.”

“Even if I vanish from your world -- be sure you remember that, Jun,” she concludes.

Featured here is a fine-lined, detailed rough, probably by the episode’s animation director, Akiko Matsuo [松尾 亜希子]. An experienced and wide-ranging gengaman (Death Note, Kobato, Fullmetal Alchemist: Sacred Star of Milos), Matsuo has of late gotten a number of episode animation direction assignments in series ranging from Is This a Zombie to Vampire Knight Guilty. This became the basis for the genga (first thumb) and with only one small change, the A1 END douga (second thumb).

However, a supervisor (probably chief animation director Kyuta Sakai) noted that in a cut just previous Shinku has gently laid her hand on Elder Jun’s. So that should be visible in this image. A partial shuusei of the genga made this change, which you can see if you look carefully on the left side of the douga. A very subtle revision, barely visible, and yet important to the animators as it underlines the much more affectionate relationship between the Elder Jun and the doll he creates in his world.

And yet ... bizarrely ... look at the next set of items!
