Cut 49. The conversation goes on, with Tetsu and Kotomi bantering over what the lad is planning to do tomorrow, while Karada listens silently and understandably ill at ease.

This long cut shows a whole series of uncomfortable expressions as the girl-turned-woman tries to cope with this turn of affairs. She first looks over toward Tetsu discreetly; then in the next cut the lad surprises her by addressing her directly. The result is a long cut that is short on action but long on psychological implication.

The featured rough (of the A1 key) presents an interesting issue. It is very effectively done, as are the other roughs preserved in this sketch set, and in a distinctive sketching style that doesn’t match the examples I’ve identified as the work of Ryoichi Oki or Sumie Kinoshita, the two senior animation directors assigned to this episode. Yet it shows considerable command, the work of an experienced animator rather than that of a talented newcomer, and the shuuseis included deal with significant details rather than redoing the entire image.

Interestingly, the pre-genga shuusei (I think probably by Oki, not imaged) raised Karada’s eyes a bit and gives her mournful-looking eyebrows. You can see the impact of this revision in the genga (first thumb). A post-genga shuusei by senior AD Hasegawa, however, largely reinstated the original artist’s expression: lowered eyes, flat eyebrows. So the rough’s animator seems to have had some status, as we’ll see again in sketch sets from this episode.

And a set of roughs with similar features showed up a while later in an Ep. 12 sketch set. A simple solution is that the artist is Mitsuharu Kajitani [梶谷 光春], the only person to receive credit for animation direction for both Eps. 10 and 12. This artist has wide ranging experience both as a key animator (Azumanga Daioh, Cyberteam in Akihabara) and episode animation director (notably in the Little Busters, Nodame Cantabile and Slayers Evolution/Revolution series).
