Tale 11, cut 123. Standing beneath the immense but currently inoperative clock that controls both Elder and Younger Jun’s worlds, Suigintou listens glumly to Souseiseki’s deal. Without going too deeply into the complex situation (and offering multiple plot spoilers), Sou promises to admit defeat in the Alice Game and relinquish her Rosa Mystica to the villainess permanently, provided that she help the group get the clock working again. The offer makes Suigintou grumpy; yet it’s a deal she would be foolish to pass up, even if it means yielding control of the plot to Elder Jun and Copy Shinku for the moment.

When I bid on this, I assumed that I was bidding on an appropriately grouchy but normal-sized sketch set of Suigintou, though from the dealer’s scan it looked as if one sketch (the layout, featured above) had been folded over at the top. When I got it, I was surprised to find it folded not just once but twice to conceal the menacing image of the World Clock hovering over the icy rock where the dolls have gathered. Unfolded and smoothed out, it makes an impressive image of a key moment in the endgame of this alternative telling.
The thumbnail adds the rough, which accepts the layout image of Suigintou but spends considerable time refining the huge clock and making it look properly huge and three-dimensional. This was likely executed by one of the episode animation directors, Kumiko Horikoshi (also 2 and 6) and Shöta Tsukuyama (also 7). Both are well-credited artists in the industry: Horikoshi did much work for the long-running Naruto Shippūden and was chief animation director of the 2007 Shonen Onmyouji. Tsukuyama was likely the junior partner with a less extensive resume, mostly as gengaman (e.g.,DBZ Battle of Gods (movie), Fairy Tail). But without more information I can’t make a call on which artist’s work this might be.
