Episode 14 (Samurai Japan), cut 179. After a frustrating night of searching for the vanished Sakura, Natsuki returns home to find the fox-spirit in her kitchen, binge-eating herself into a stupor. She reacts with several degrees of shock and dismay, then slumps in dismay, while Sakura finishes a bowl of noodles, gulps down the last, then tosses the bowl aside to reach for something else.

This episode, subcontracted to the newly organized Kyoto Animation studio founded by Tatsuya Ishihara, had animation overseen by Kazumi Ikeda, later character designer and chief animation director for both Clannad and the 2006 remake of Kanon. A puzzle is presented, however, by the presence of one complete rough on light green paper (featured above) and another, partial rough on light yellow paper (a detail from which is included in the thumbnail).

Sketch sets from other episodes that Ikeda directed do not contain the light-green stage, and as the gengas and final footage adopt the changes made the light-yellow versions, I’m confident that Ikeda executed these second-stage drawings.

But who drew the light-green preliminary versions? They are well done, and so I’m tempted to see them as first drafts by Ikeda, which were then submitted to the episode director (Yoshiko Shima) and then reworked before going to the genga stage. But in truth I do not know: it’s possible that Ikeda worked with an uncredited junior animator, who worked up the images for the senior animator to correct and fine-tune (as was the practice in the CGI series Asatte no Hōkō.
