Episode 22: Peau’s Depression, cut 173. Increasingly wearied by the strange rash of holes that have been appearing in time/space, poor Peau is trying to get in a relaxing shower while a fellow team member is reading a report speculating on their cause.

I’ve featured the A2 genga image, showing Peau opening a weary eye and turning back toward her companion. This graceful sketch is also quite faint -- I’ve darkened the scan somewhat to make it easily visible. This faintness is one of the hallmarks of the artwork contributed by Kyoto Animation, to which Pierrot subcontracted seven episodes for this series (Episodes 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, and 24). This one, a humorous tangent to the main plot (though with an important plot detail dropped at the very end) was directed by KyoAni’s founder and key artist, Tatsuya Ishihara, with animation direction by Kazumi Ikeda.

In the thumbs I’ve added the A1 keyframe, along with an autograph layout, somewhat damaged by the celotape used to baste sheets of paper together. That has the distinctive circled symbol, looking a bit like a katakana “shi” letter, that appears on many layouts from Episodes 14, 22, and 24. As Ikeda was animation director for all three of these, I take it either as a signature for the sketch (KyoAni animation directors often did the layouts as well as roughs), or else as a sign that this artist reviewed and approved the art.
