Cut 188. With the Karada/Shōko dilemma somewhat stabilized, the plot moves back to the little girl’s boyfriend, Tetsu, who’s puzzled and frightened that his partner has vanished. And a new plot thread gets introduced: we see Kotomi at the kitchen table, happily chatting with Tetsu’s mother and agreeing eagerly to help him with his summer studies.

I’ve featured a nice rough on light-salmon paper here, which includes a preliminary design for the summery background. This is presumably the work of episode animation director Sumie Kinoshita, and it catches Kotomi’s bug-like smile nicely. The thumbs add a characteristic “box-eyes” layout correction from episode director Daisuke Takashima. (Similar “box-eyed” sketches are seen in sketch sets I’ve gotten from Episodes 1 and 10, also directed by Takashima.) The second thumb adds the nicely done A1 genga for Kotomi. (That glass of iced tea got a lot of attention from the animators, earning four CGI layers: back of the glass, ice cubes, front of the glass, sweat drops.)

This is not actually the scene in which she’s introduced to the audience. Earlier, she’s slid out of the bushes to talk to Shôko, who’s watching a group of children playing and wishing she could join in. But now this likeable trickster is going to work on Tetsu to get him “out of the box” that he’s locked himself into. As a result, both find themselves going places, doing things, and engaging with people that they would not have dared do when we first met them.
