Ep. 6, cut 23. The innocent girl is playing with her tiger Rascaless, when both of them suddenly come alert. She looks to the sea surrounding her home and notices the boat bringing Lilith and Hazuki to her island, then turns sharply to find her companion padding off toward the shore to confront them. This cut comes in at about 3:34 of the episode, soon after the opening credits.

Featured here is the A1/B1 genga that starts the cut, with the original layout (which I’d gotten in an earlier lot) in the first thumb and a nice impressionistic rough in the second.

SENSEI CHECK!

Animation director for this episode was Animation for this episode was directed by Kyuta Sakai [坂井 久太], one of many animators who cut their teeth on Cardcaptor Sakura and Princess Tutu (gengas). Sakai had previously worked on Pita-Ten (character designer), Strawberry Marshmallow (character designer/chief animation director), and most notably Higurashi/When They Cry (character designer/chief animation director). She was also character designer and one of the chief animation directors for Rozen Maiden Zuruckspulen (2013).

Lately she has received credit as character designer/chief animation director for the successful series Re: ZERO - Starting Life in Another World (3 seasons and 2 OAVs to date). The roughs included with this item and others from this episode are likely this artist’s work.
