Episode 11: The 'Now' That Is There [そこにある現在(いま Soko ni aru ima], Cut 7. Tetsu, slowly awakening after his feverish brush with death, has a vivid dream of being at the secret spring he had found near the hometown temple. In the dream, he find that he has brought his sweetheart, the little-girl Karada, to the magical spot. She looks at the spring, then happily up at her companion.

I’ve featured the C2 rough here, probably by Kazunori Iwakura, the senior of the two episode animation directors. But Ikuko Itō, who supervised this and the other odd-numbered episodes, took a fairly strong hand to Iwakura’s work, as you can see in her “shuusei” in the first thumbnail. Smaller eyes, slightly larger body, making her look older for her age. Still, the episode AD’s work has a charm of its own, as you can see from the C1 rough in the second thumb. And you can move ahead to see the reanimated dougas to see how this cut finally appeared.

Caution! Fussy Notes

Notice the little note at the bottom right of the sketch: “Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” I’d noted before that Masahiro Fujii had gotten into the habit of jotting this on the bottom of roughs that went to the senior animation director, whether that was Itō-sama or her partner, Shinku Hasegawa. Now it appears that Iwakura also adopted the same habit. It would be interesting to see some sketches from the other two episodes on which this artist worked (Eps. 2 and 6) to see if this was habitual or a custom picked up from Fujii.

Iwakura was a veteran of Revolutionary Girl Utena (gengas) like many of the senior animators on this project. The artist had also been character designer for Ai Yori Aoshi and Loveless and later did the same for other important projects, including Sky Girls and Nabari no Ou. Recently Iwakura has been credited with character design for a number of projects, including Magimoji Rurumo (2014), Alice and Zoroku (2017), Vatican Miracle Examiner (2017), and the upcoming Planet With (2018).

Ah, but we know that Tetsu never was able to get Karada-chan to scale the final grade of the difficult climb, and that she gave up in tears. So why is he having a dream that the two were together by the spring?
