Labeled “17-154B,” this cel comes from the middle of Episode 17, the second part of Mushi’s adaptation of “The Tinder-Box.” Here the protagonist, now in full dress uniform, presents himself to the delighted princess. Sequence numbers: A TOME (Princess), B5 END (Soldier).

This episode (now accessible on YouTube under its Japanese title) portrays this scene in a delightful way: the Princess (unlike Andersen’s original) is weary of dealing with stuck-up nobility and is just waiting to find a commoner with the right kind of spunk to run off with. So the meeting/falling-in-love scene is very funny in a wholly unconventional way. One imagines the Danish tale-teller (who also had little sympathy for aristocrats) would approve.
