Cut 370A [presumably of this final scene]. Syrius and Malta’s affair, frustrated by fate at every turn, appears to end in their tragic deaths. But in a final scene, Glaucus, the ancient god of the seas, intervenes. Affirming that so a deep a love could never be sinful, he lifts the lovers’ bodies toward the sky (a top layer would show them in his hand) and bids them travel together to a star where their romance can be consummated. Sequence number: A32

This detailed cel, entirely hand-traced, is one of the most gorgeous anime images I’ve ever seen. It came stuck tightly to a sturdy piece of rice paper, which normally I remove, as it comes away easily when dampened. But one look at the detailed work on the claw tips and the details of Glaucus’ complex array of horns made me hesitate. One careless move and those painted tips are likely to peel off with the paper.
Primum non nocere, I thought: or in the vernacular, for the love of Tezuka-sama, don’t damage the cel! So I’ve scanned the image with the rice paper in place and left the two together for the time being.
